How would you feel if you contacted a photographer and she replied that you were too fat for photos, suggesting that you wait until you lose some of that extra weight?
Appalled by that first sentence? That was actually said to a real girl who was looking to book a session!
Kim, an excited mother to be, contacted a photographer to schedule a boudoir session. She had seen so many beautiful photos online of pregnant woman, empowered by their bodies and the miracles they were growing inside them, so she instantly knew she wanted to have this keepsake for herself.
The photographer quickly responded to Kim’s email, telling her it was ‘tasteless and highly inappropriate” to be photographed while pregnant. She suggested that Kim wait until after she lost all of her baby weight, as she didn’t want to put in the kind of effort it would take to flatter her.
Each time I think of the words used to respond to Kim, I’m overcome with a wave of nausea. Photographers are supposed to make people feel amazing in their skin and here Kim was being told that she was too fat to be photographed and wouldn’t be a flattering subject.
Girls, never allow anyone to make you feel as though you aren’t beautiful, not good enough – whether it be in front of the camera or just in general. We come in all shapes and sizes, each with our own flaws – and that’s totally okay.
Each of my brides will tell you that one of my favorite things to hear are variations of “I don’t photograph well” or “I look horrible in front of the camera”. Photographers can be magical beings, allowing you to see yourself through another set of ‘eyes’ and really see how gorgeous you and your body really are. Once you see the results of a finished photograph by a professional who really cares about you, you will view yourself in a whole ‘nother light.
Don’t believe that you could look amazing? I challenge you to schedule a session with me and not fall in love with yourself : )
