If you’re like many parents, you’ve probably realized how fast time flies once your children arrive. With every moment comes a new stage of growth, highlighting the importance of scheduling a professional photo session to capture these all too short moments. Yet, the thought of planning the photography session can often feel daunting.
Whether you are considering a session for your child or ready to schedule now, read on for a simple playbook designed to ease that overwhelming feeling.
Clothing
Selecting the perfect outfit for your photo session can feel overwhelming, but I aim to make your experience easier. The studio closet is filled with a variety of clothing pieces in different sizes and styles, available for you to use free of charge. However, if you prefer to bring your own outfits—whether it’s something from home or newly bought—that’s completely fine, too! If you’re unsure which outfit to choose, you’re welcome to send photos before your session or bring options along, and I’ll be happy to help you decide.
Since kids are prone to making messes despite our best efforts, it’s always a good idea to bring a backup outfit, just in case. To minimize day-of stress, set aside the clothing a few days beforehand and double-check that everything still fits—children grow quickly, and you don’t want any last-minute surprises!
Snacks
A quick snack can work wonders in calming an irritable or cranky child during a session. While I try to keep the studio stocked with a few snacks, it’s a good idea to pack some of your child’s favorites. Just be mindful to avoid messy options like powdered, chocolate, or dyed snacks. Water is always available at the studio, and you’re welcome to bring clear juice as well. The goal is to keep clothes and faces clean!
That said, a snack won’t be enough to fill their bellies, so it’s best to have a meal before your photo session to keep everyone happy and comfortable.
Bring Comfort Items
Bringing along a favorite toy can offer comfort to your child in an unfamiliar environment. It’s also a great tool to capture their attention or bring out a few giggles during the session. You might even consider incorporating the toy in a few photos as a special keepsake, preserving a memory of what they loved most at this stage in their life.
Be Patient
Try to resist urging your child to smile, as it often leads to forced, cheesy grins. Instead, let the session unfold naturally, allowing their playfulness to shine through and capture their true personality. It’s normal for things to go a bit off track during a child’s session, whether it’s a small tantrum or getting distracted and wandering off. That’s perfectly okay! Knowing that children can be unpredictable, I never schedule sessions back-to-back, ensuring we have plenty of time to handle any unexpected moments—whether it’s shyness, a meltdown, or just curiosity getting the better of them.
