There’s a lot of advice out there about how to prepare for photos, but just as important is knowing what not to do. Over the years, I’ve seen what works and what totally backfires. Think of this as a little heads-up so your family photo experience can feel relaxed and enjoyable.
Don’t threaten a punishment if your child “isn’t good”
I’ve heard it more times than I can count: “If you don’t smile, no iPad later” or “You’d better behave or we’re not getting ice cream.” I know those threats come from wanting everything to go smoothly, but they only add pressure. Kids start worrying about making mistakes, instead of just being themselves, and that tension shows in the photos.
The truth is, the best images usually come when your child is relaxed, playful, and just being who they are. Let me guide the flow of the session. I’ll use fun prompts, games, and interaction to bring out genuine smiles.
Don’t schedule anything back-to-back
A family photo session alongside a jam-packed day does not mix well. If everyone’s already tired, overstimulated, or rushed, it’s tough settle in and enjoy the moment. And when parents feel rushed, kids feel it, too.
Give yourself the space to breathe by keeping the day open before and after your sessions, with the exception of maybe a stop for an ice cream treat after. When families arrive without the pressure of racing the clock before it’s time for the next thing on the to do list, the session feels calm and enjoyable. That relaxed energy makes all the difference in the photos!
Don’t try brand-new clothes right before the session
Brand new outfits can be tempting, but they can also backfire. Maybe the fabric is itchy, the fit feels off, or the outfit just doesn’t sit right once your child puts it on. When kids aren’t comfortable in their clothes, it shows in their expressions and body language.
If you do want something new, try it on beforehand and make sure it feels good. Bring an extra option or two just in case. And remember, my Sinking Spring studio has a full closet of carefully chosen outfits for children and moms.
Don’t feel like you have to figure it all out alone
One of the biggest surprises for families is realizing how much we tackle before photo day. During your in-person planning appointment, we talk through outfits, your vision, and what you’d love to do with your photos afterward.
That way, you’re not guessing about what to bring or scrambling last minute. By the time you arrive, everything’s already been thought through. All that’s left for you to do is show up, ready for an awesome time. Let me take care of the rest!

Family photos should never feel like another chore on your to-do list. They should be fun, full of laughter, and something you’ll actually look forward to. Avoiding these common pitfalls is one of the easiest ways to make sure your session feels calm and natural from start to finish.
If you’re looking for a family photographer in Berks County who takes the guesswork out of the process and helps you enjoy every step, I’d love to welcome you into my Sinking Spring studio. Together, we’ll create photos that actually look and feel like your family.
